1160-75
Manuscript (Ms. 17)
Cathedral, Winchester

This manuscript of 468 folios (580 x 396 mm) contains the Bible in two volumes. It is illustrated by 64 initials, 46 pages are fully illuminated.

This image on folio 120v shows a huge initial P into which the Old Testament story of the prophet Elijah being taken up to heaven is squeezed. The horse-drawn chariot of fire is depicted in the shaft of the letter in order to make place above it for another episode of Elijah's life. Elijah, as he is drawn up to heaven, bestows his mantle on the young Elisha. This is seen sliding down the shaft to be received by Elisha at the foot of the initial.
