This early Medieval mosaic is the work of an artisan from Constantinople. Itinerant artisans skilled in mosaic came from Byzantium to work all over Western Europe. Their forceful, colourful, effulgent images of religious and decorative subjects contributed a major visual vocabulary for medieval and later artists to draw upon.
