Frescoes showing scenes from the life of St George decorate the walls of the chapel built by the Lupi family, who were counts of Soragna, in the sacristy of the Basilica del Santo. Once more Altichiero worked together with Avanzo, a Paduan painter with whom some years earlier he had painted the frescoes in the St Felice Chapel in the right transept of the Basilica del Santo. Here Altichiero shows most interestingly the influence of Giotto in the solidity of his groups of figures posed in large natural spaces. He achieves brilliant results with this technique, softened by Gothic details. In addition to this, the Veronese painter took pains to portray everyday feelings. Notice the way the father takes his son away from the scene of the macabre torture.
