A moonlit river, with fishermen working away busily in their boats, and a town silhouetted on the bank. Further down we can see ships being repaired; they have been careened so that their hulls can be burnt clean. The fiery glow to the right indicates more work going on. The sense of night-time is conveyed with great skill. Avercamp produced a large number of elaborate drawings such as this, which were often framed as small paintings. This is his only moonlit scene.
