Benedetto da Maiano was one of the most important sculptures working in the final decades of the fifteenth-century. The Altarpiece of the Annunciation - one of his late masterpieces - is in effect a painted altarpiece turned to stone, replete with a predella and three-dimensional saints in the niches.
