Benedetto da Maiano was commissioned by the wealthy banker Pietro Mellini to create a funeral monument in the form of a pulpit. The reliefs of the pulpit represent scenes from the life of the Franciscans. The scenes are comparable with Domenico Ghirlandaio's frescoes in the Sassetti Chapel of the Santa Trinità in Florence.
