The pulpit in the central nave of the Santa Croce was commissioned by Pietro Mellini in 1470. The splendid bas-reliefs, somewhat reminiscent of those by Ghiberti on eastern door of the Baptistry, depict episodes from the life of St Francis of Assisi. Particularly worthy of note are the panels showing the approval of the Franciscan order by Pope Honorius III, the saint receiving the stigmata and his death.
