BICCI DI LORENZO
(b. 1373, Firenze, d. 1452, Firenze)

Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels

1420s
Tempera on panel
Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence

The represented saints are Louis of Toulouse, Francis of Assisi, Anthony of Padua and Nicholas of Bari.

The prolific Bicci di Lorenzo ensured his popularity by recalling the works of Gentile da Fabriano in some of his paintings, such as this panel. His Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels reprised the Virgin and Child from the Quaratesi Altarpiece without capturing its luminous colours, subtle modelling or the tender rapport between the figures.
