The Isle of the Dead

1883
Oil on panel, 80 x 150 cm
Nationalgalerie, Berlin

This canvas was first painted as a tranquil refuge for Marie Berna, a recently bereaved Florentine widow. Soul-satisfying, The Isle of the Dead - that romantic title a dealer's invention - meets our unspoken need for imaging a pacific afterlife. Counting on its popularity, Böcklin painted five versions.

The Isle of the Dead inspired musical compositions by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Max Reger.
