The Birth of Christ

1476-77
Fresco, 200 x 300 cm
Santa Maria Novella, Florence

Bedded on a cloth, the child is sleeping on a hewn stone, surrounded by the adoring Mary and Joseph, who is leaning wearily against his saddle. Behind them, the ox and ass are looking through a hole in the ruined stable wall. The small John the Baptist, who is hurrying up impetuously, is an exceptionally rare figure in this peaceful pictorial theme. The composition of the picture, as an arch, suggests that this fresco was once in one of the lunettes in the church.
