BOTTICELLI, Sandro
(b. 1445, Firenze, d. 1510, Firenze)

St John the Baptist

1480s
Pen with bistre on pink paper, 360 x 155 mm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

The strikingly confidently drawn figure varies very little from the monumental figures of St John the Baptist in the San Barnaba and Trinity altarpieces. The figure of the Baptist who is facing towards the left in the Bardi altarpiece also displays a considerable affinity to this work. The series clearly demonstrates just how well Botticelli was able to vary a single basic figure according to the requirements of individual compositions.
