BRAY, Salomon de
(b. 1597, Amsterdam, d. 1664, Haarlem)

Young Woman in an Imaginary Costume

1652
Oil on panel, 100 x 84 cm
Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem

Though the painting has always been taken for a portrait, it is more likely to be a 'tronie', a study of a woman in exotic dress. The artist painted her without attributes or accessories, and therefore did not intend her to represent a specific historical, or allegorical figure.
