When he sculpted Molière full length for the 'grands hommes' series, over the years 1784 to 1787, he made a drama out of the seated figure who seems to be actor and director as well as writer of plays: a figure seized as if momentarily, arresting the spectator's attention with that slanted pose and gesticulating left hand.
