This painting was apparently commissioned as a pendant to Annibale's Landscape with Diana and Callisto (private collection). It was recently assumed that Francesco Albani was responsible for the execution, probably following a composition by Annibale. This would suggest that it may date from the onset of Annibale's final illness, or even from just after his death.
