Sappho Leaping into the Sea from the Leucadian Promontory

c. 1840
Watercolour over graphite, 370 x 228 mm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

This watercolour drew its inspiration from the Nouvelles Méditations Poétiques Alphonse Lamartine, which follows the pathetic version of Sappho's death told the first time in Ovid's Heroides.
