Interior of the Nieuwe Kerk, Delft

1663
Pen painting in grisaille on wood, 52 x 45 cm
Private collection

In this pen painting (pen, pencil, and brown ink with gray and white washes) the nave and aisles of the Nieuwe Kerk are surveyed from a vantage point near the western entrance to the church. The interior space is luminous, the shadows finely observed, the floor tiles invented, and the figures placed carefully with regard to the architecture and furnishing.
