Tomb of the Children of Charles VIII

1506
Marble
Cathedral, Tours

One of the finest funerary monuments of the period is the tomb of the children of Charles VIII, dated 1506. Its marble sculptures include not only touching effigies of the two deceased youngsters but also infant airborne angels supporting the family coat-of-arms, and reliefs depicting the story of Hercules.

This tomb made of white Carrara marble with insets of black marble, was commissioned in 1499. (It was originally in Saint-Martin, Tours.) The gisants and angels are attributed to Michel Colombe and his workshop including his nephew Guillaume Regnault, while the concave panels of the sarcophagus, decorated with armorial shields, rinceaux, dolphins, and depictions of Samson and Hercules, to Girolamo da Fiesole.
