Portraits (from 1527)
by Lucas CRANACH the Elder

The Reformation provided Cranach with a new subject area. Cranach offered himself as a pictorial propagandist for the new cause. In 1520 he executed the portrait - first an engraving - of Martin Luther, whose image from then on was shaped and reshaped by Cranach's creations. Painted portraits of Luther were produced by the hundreds in the Cranach workshop. From 1525 Luther's portrait was mainly produced in the form of a pair with a pendant depicting either his wife Katharina von Bora or Philipp Melanchton.
