Three Franciscan Saints

c. 1470
Panel, 159 x 162 cm
Museo Diocesano, Cortona

The polyptych depicts three Franciscan saints, put into relief on a gold background and represented in an attractive simplicity of lines. The three saints are from left to right: St Francis of Assisi, St Bernardino of Siena and St Anthony of Padua.

The archaic look which emanates from the three wood paintings forming the polyptych must very well have matched the Gothic architecture of the Franciscan Church of Cortona. This church was built by Brother Elia and is the place where this work comes from.
