Triumphal Chariot (5/6)

1522
Woodcuts, mounted in pairs, 5/6: 412 x 565 mm
Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe

The Triumphal Chariot, designed by Dürer, was part and, at the same time, the conclusion of the Triumphal Procession, which was used to glorify the glorious deeds of Emperor Maximilian I. The emperor's magnificent triumphal chariot is pulled by a team of twelve horses, accompanied by personifications of the Virtues. The chariot, driven by "Reason," is also accompanied by numerous allegories which are identified by writing and added to the emperor's fame and glory. By 1600, the Triumphal Chariot had appeared in seven Latin and German editions.
