DÜRER, Albrecht
(b. 1471, Nürnberg, d. 1528, Nürnberg)

Rear view of the female head type 7

1528
Woodcut
Staatsbibliothek, Bamberg

The picture shows an illustration from the Four Books on Human Proportions, Book I, published posthumously by Willibald Pirckheimer and Dürer's wife Agnes.

The basic measurement in the female nude depicted from the rear is her head, and here the addition of seven lengths completes the length of her body. In his visual and theoretical explanations, Dürer created variations of a variety of basic types in order to make it easier to give them individual features. The figure's left arm is held in front of her body to make the illustration clearer.
