The painting is attributed to Jan van Eyck. The date of 1442 appears on the painting, showing that it was completed by workshop associates in just a year after Van Eyck's death. It can be supposed from the letter on the table, that St Jerome represents a portrait of Cardinal Niccolò Albergati.
