The Van der Paele panel is Jan van Eyck's largest painting after the Ghent Altarpiece. Once again the sense of reality, both in the treatment of space, light and matter, and in the sense of the presence of figures, is breathtaking. Here, too, the effect is produced by the sort of special techniques and know-how that went beyond the new 'academic' rules prevalent in Italy at the time and with which Van Eyck must have been familiar.
