Watercolour over a black pencil sketch, 490 x 360 mm
Musée du Louvre, Paris
When a walled-up doorway in a feudal castle is reopened, a couple embracing is discovered, apparently intact. A second couple in Renaissance garb looks on aghast at the sight. This superb watercolour, with its enigmatic subject, is typical of the Troubadour style.
