The identity of the adolescent portrayed in this painting is unknown. The painting was formerly attributed to Raphael (as a self-portrait), then to other painters (Timoteo Viti, Domenico Alfano, Perugino's workshop). The attribution to Ridolfo Ghirlandaio seems to be final.
