GOSSART, Jan
(b. ca. 1478, Maubeuge, d. 1532, Middelburg)

Carondelet Diptych (left wing)

1517
Oil on panel, 43 x 27 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

The left wing of the diptych represents Jean Carondelet. The donor portrait is superior to the other wing, both in truth of life and in pictorial quality; it is, moreover, in a better state of preservation. It is Gossart's most splendid portrayal of Jean Carondelet, painted when the sitter was archdeacon of the cathedral at Besançon, and it is one of the masterpieces of early Netherlandish portraiture.
