Apsidal chapel, Sant'Agostino, San Gimignano

In the centre St Augustine is surrounded by some monks. The bare path leads up to a monastery on the mountain top, possibly a reference to the medieval legends according to which St Augustine built a monastery and entrusted it to monks whom he met in the forest. The scene in the foreground on the right depicts the confirmation of the rule of the hermits on Mount Pisano. It is an attempt to show that Tuscany was the area where the order of Augustinian hermits was founded.
