Landscape in 16th century art was not treated realistically in the sense that it was a portrayal of actual views. Compositions were developed using sketches from nature. Jacob Grimmer sought topographical precision in his View of Kiel, but still felt it necessary to add the picturesque pleasure garden scene and a colourful procession of fair-goers.
