Paulus Verschuur

1643
Oil on canvas, 119 x 94 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Paulus Verschuur (1606-1667) was a wealthy merchant in Rotterdam. He is seen in the portrait at the age of thirty-seven. He had a textile manufactory and was also very active in civic affairs.

In keeping with upper-middle-class preferences in the Reformed community, the sitter's costume is strictly black, apart from the lace collar and cuffs, and the beige gloves on and in his left hand. The figure's turn to the right implies a pendant portrait, however, such a portrait is not known.
