Vase of Flowers

Oil on canvas, 88 x 68 cm
The Hermitage, St. Petersburg

Specializing in still-lifes and flower pieces, Heem's oeuvre is characterized by a number of Baroque-style paintings featuring a profusion of different elements. His work reveals a debt to Flemish artists such as Frans Snyders, who painted large and typically Baroque still-lifes filled with game, live animals, fruit, and flower, in complex and overladen compositions. But Heem was also influenced by the work of other artists, such as Heda, which caused his style to become progressively more detailed and less overloaded.
