The dating is uncertain, some critics think it is a late work from 1539-41. The folded paper with inscription, and probably also the inscription in the background, are later additions.
Several copies by the Holbein workshop, and some later copies exist, one in the Museum of Art in Cleveland, another in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
