HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger
(b. 1497, Augsburg, d. 1543, London)

Henry VIII and the Barber Surgeons

c. 1543
Paper mounted on canvas, 160 x 280 cm
Royal College of Surgeons of England, London

In order to preserve a second version of the painting of Henry VIII with the barber surgeons, Holbein's cartoon, which he drew as a preparation for the panel painting, was completely painted over with oil paints at an unknown date. The anonymous artist undertook major changes compared with the original composition by inserting a window on the right instead of the original inscription panel. However, the cartoon sticks more faithfully to the original grouping of the barber surgeons on the right of the composition.
