Holbein was inevitably affected by Martin Luther's teachings, and he designed a pair of woodcuts addressing Reformation issues. Both designs were cut by Heinrich Lützelberger and printed around 1525-26, before Holbein went to England. Each of these works, Christ as the True Light and True and False Forgiveness, takes up the arguments of Luther. Each contrast true and humble believers against the corrupt clergy and institutions of the Catholic Church.
