The Vow of Louis XIII

1824
Oil on canvas, 421 x 262 cm

Ingres continued to paint in the Neoclassical style throughout his career, although the style came under attack from younger contemporaries like Géricault or Delacroix. The Vow of Louis XIII is a kind of neoclassical votive painting. In it Ingres adapted whole passages of Raphael's Madonna di Foligno, but he also borrowed forms that were developed by the Carraccis.
