JACOPO DA MONTAGNANA
(b. ca. 1445, Montagnana, d. 1499, Padova)

The Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Annunciate

1494-97
Tempera on wood, 191 x 76 cm (each)
Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice

Originally in the Church of Monteortone in Padua, these two paintings must have formed part of a larger whole. While translating Mantegna's great legacy into decorative linearism, Montagnana also proved himself no stranger to the aesthetic innovations of Giovanni Bellini.
