KEYSER, Thomas de
(b. 1596/97, Amsterdam, d. 1667, Amsterdam)

A Lady

1632
Oil on oak, 79 x 52 cm
Staatliche Museen, Berlin

This the companion-piece of the painting representing a gentleman, the sitter's husband (Musée du Louvre, Paris).

Thomas de Keyser's life was spent in Amsterdam, where his lustrous, fervent likenesses of the local aristocracy and intelligentsia stand out from those by most of his peers. Seated against a Mannerist doorway, an extremely richly dressed young woman poses in the wintertime, her foot resting on a brazier. White gloves laid on the carpet-covered table alongside stress her upper-class status.
