Storm over a landscape

c. 1500
Red chalk on paper, 200 x 150 mm
Royal Library, Windsor

We can see over a plain with a town into a valley above which is a low rain cloud, from which rain is pouring forth. The drawing appears to be based on a direct observation and was either produced at the location or from a sketch drawn at the location. Its narrative character suggests it dates from around 1500. Later landscapes are characterized more strongly by other interests connected with Leonard's projects or scientific studies.
