Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints

c. 1430
Panel, 44 x 34 cm
Museo della Collegiata, Empoli

This small panel picture also has claim to being an early independent painting by Lippi and reflects impulses from Masaccio's style. It has the effect of a triptych with the central unit devoted to the Madonna and Child and two musical angels, much like the Pisa Altarpiece, with standing saints on either side. The enthroned Madonna in this case is placed at a greater distance from the picture plane than is the case with Masaccio's larger altarpiece, however, and the sacred group is raised by a set of stairs higher in the pictorial field.
