LIPPI, Fra Filippo
(b. 1406, Firenze, d. 1469, Spoleto)

Portrait of a Man and a Woman (detail)

c. 1440
Tempera on wood
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The landscape in the double portrait is conceived in fairly naturalistic terms. There is the possibility that Lippi's inspiration was a Netherlandish painting. The viewer's glance travels through the window and down a country road past some houses and villas to a distant range of mountains.
