LIPPI, Fra Filippo
(b. 1406, Firenze, d. 1469, Spoleto)

Coronation of the Virgin (detail)

1441-47
Tempera on wood
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

The detail shows the upper left part of the painting.

The light descends from the golden, curly-haired heads of the angels. The artist has given individual expression to each single face, and to the various textures of the veils and other fabrics, textures he emphasizes with a lively chiaroscuro technique. The faces, so expansive in the light, appear broad and almost compressed by the thin line at the edge of the painting.
