Four Saints Altarpiece

c. 1483
Wood
San Michele, Lucca

After the death of his father, Fra Filippo Lippi, Filippino continued his study of art with Botticelli, acquiring similar stylistic tendencies. He shares elongated figural proportions with his master, as well as the use of smallish, somewhat expressionless faces, in the interest of a certain pictorial perfection. This example is unusual in that it is an altarpiece with saints, without a central Madonna and Child.
