The picture shows one of the scenes from the life of Christ painted by Pietro Lorenzetti on the vault of the south arm of the western transept of the Lower Church.
In this scene the painter makes skillful use of the obstacle represented by the arch on the wall to produce a scene split into two levels. The lively dialog between Christ and the apostle conveys a sense of movement that embrace all the other figures.
