MALER, Hans
(b. ca. 1480, Ulm, d. ca. 1529, Schwaz)

Portrait of Moritz Welzer von Eberstein

1524
Tempera on wood, 36 x 30 cm
Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna

Hans Maler mainly worked in Schwatz, Tyrol, and painted portraits for merchants and for the Imperial Court in Innsbruck. The inscriptions on this portrait and on its companion-piece, the Portrait of Maria Welzer, née Tänzel, depicting his wife, identify the two sitters as a young couple of Carinthian descent.
