MANDER, van, Dutch family of artists

Karel van Mander the Elder (also Karel van Mander, I) was a Dutch Mannerist painter, poet, and writer. His son Karel van Mander, II (c. 1579-1623) was tapestry designer, and his grandson Karel van Mander, III (1609-1670) a portraitist and decorative artist, active in Denmark. Cornelis van Mander (1611-1657), the brother of Karel van Mander III, sculptor and stonemason, worked as court sculptor for Frederick III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf. Cornelis had three sons, the eldest, Johan (b. 1641) became a stonecutter and sculptor.
