Jaspard Marsy (1600–74) had two sons celebrated for their work together, Gaspard Marsy and Balthazard Marsy; two other sons who seem to have been minor collaborators with them; and a daughter, Jeanne, who married the sculptor Pierre Legros I. Jaspard himself, of whose origins and training virtually nothing is known, was the dominant figure in the artistic life of Cambrai during the second quarter of the 17th century. He possessed great versatility and was in continual demand for his skills as a figure-sculptor, carver of epitaphs and rood screens, restorer, architect, and commercial dealer of materials. From the 1650s he worked in Paris.
