MASOLINO da Panicale
(b. 1383, Panicale, d. 1447, Firenze)

Annunciation

1428-30
Fresco
Cappella del Sacramento, San Clemente, Rome

Always ambitious in terms of rendering space and architecture, Masolino depicts the Annunciation in an elaborate system of columns that signify a loggia. His figure style in this painting is quite removed from that of the Brancacci Chapel when he was in Masaccio's shadow, and seems like a throwback to an earlier mode. On the other hand, the fresco is not very well preserved, making a very close reading difficult.
