UNKNOWN MASTER, French
(active around 1750)

Young Woman with a Muff

c. 1750
Oil on canvas, 118 x 95 cm
National Gallery of Art, Washington

Despite its Italian provenance, the portrait is in all likelihood a product of the French school. In terms of costume and pose the portrait is related to Jean-Marc Nattier's portrait of the Comtesse de Tillières in the Wallace Collection, London. However, the portrait lacks the vivid sense of characterization of Nattier's more elegant and sophisticated portraiture.
