Cathedral, Le Puy

Among the monumental Romanesque wooden works that are preserved, we have church doors with relief carving or with carving close to champlevé, whose decorations stand out in very shallow relief against hollowed out grounds. Of the latter, some are concentrated in the Velay in France. Among them, the doors of Le Puy Cathedral, signed by Gauzfredus, are dated by an inscription which mentions the patron, Bishop Peter III (1143-1155).
