St Stonybroke was a mock saint, subject of several light-hearted texts in the 16th and 17th centuries. He was the fictitious patron of all who had lost everything through drunkenness, excess or some other causes. It used to be said that down-and-outs had stranded with St Stonybroke's 'lice-ridden' ship. That is what is depicted here, which explains the prominence given to the ship.
Formerly this large, tapestry-like print was attributed to Lucas van Leyden.
