The artist signed his prints with the monogram of a W and an A with a key or cross. He was active in Bruges during the reign of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (1467-77). Most of his 81 prints were intended as models for other artists. He was widely known for his depictions of ships, the earliest to survive from the history of printmaking.
The artist is referred to as Master W with the Key.
